Each month, we highlight a selection of National Health Observances (NHOs) to raise awareness about important health issues that affect Americans every day.
We also provide links to a number of different resources that you can use to spread the word about these NHOs to your networks.
In August, we’re talking about immunizations, children’s eye health, and breastfeeding. Check out the resources for our featured NHOs and join us in advocating for health nationwide!
- National Immunization Awareness Month
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) sponsors National Immunization Awareness Month to stress the importance of getting all recommended vaccines. Use CDC’s promotional materials to encourage people of all ages to get the vaccines they need on schedule. You can also share healthfinder’s resources about vaccines. And check out the Healthy People 2020 topic area on immunization and infectious diseases. - Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month
Sponsored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, this NHO encourages everyone to protect and preserve children’s eyesight. Get kids excited to learn about their vision with the Ask a Scientist Video Series from the National Eye Institute (NEI). You can also share this easy-to-understand healthfinder resource for parents to help them take care of their kids’ eyes. Finally, take a look at the Healthy People 2020 objectives related to eye health and vision.
- National Breastfeeding Month
The United States Breastfeeding Committee uses the month of August to advocate for breastfeeding support through policy and practice. CDC has a resource library filled with breastfeeding materials, and there are a number of Healthy People 2020 objectives that aim to increase breastfeeding and breastfeeding support programs. You can also share healthfinder’s breastfeeding guide and tips for eating healthy while breastfeeding.
Use these resources to promote National Immunization Awareness Month, Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, and National Breastfeeding Month — and help us work toward a healthier Nation.
