Summary

Cardiac arrests that happen outside the hospital are the leading cause of death in the United States. People who have cardiac arrests in public are more likely to survive if a bystander uses an AED (automated external defibrillator) before emergency responders arrive. Putting AEDs in public places and teaching people how to use them can increase the rate of bystander AED use and increase cardiac arrest survival rates.
