About this objective
Data
National baseline: 9.1 percent of adults aged 45 years and over had lost all of their natural teeth in 2013-16
National target: 6.3 percent
Methodology
Methodology notes
The case definition is "lost all teeth due to caries or periodontal diseases"; however, because it is not feasible to identify the cause of tooth loss, the absence of 32 natural teeth (including third molars) is used as a proxy. The measurement protocol described for Healthy People 2000 is still in use.
History
In 2026, the baseline value was changed from 7.9 to 9.1 percent. The target was changed from 5.4 to 6.3 percent. The target-setting method did not change.
