This article presents findings from a survey of local public health departments that had been accredited for 1 year. Findings show more than 9 in 10 health departments report benefits like: 

  • Stimulated opportunities for improved quality and performance 
  • Increased ability to self-assess their work
  • Improved accountability and transparency
  • Strengthened management processes

These findings show that accreditation has the potential to strengthen health departments’ internal capacities and infrastructure.
