These recommendations for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) testing are for all public-and private-sector health care providers. They update previous recommendations for screening pregnant women and are meant to:

  • Increase HIV screening
  • Lead to earlier detection of HIV
  • Identify and counsel people who have HIV and don’t know it
  • Link people with HIV to clinical and prevention services 
  • Further reduce perinatal transmission of HIV
