The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommends smoke-free policies to reduce secondhand smoke exposure and tobacco use. CPSTF found strong evidence that smoke‑free policies reduce secondhand smoke exposure, tobacco use, and tobacco-related diseases and deaths and increase successful quit attempts. In addition, economic evidence indicates that smoke-free policies can reduce health care costs substantially and that smoke-free policies don’t hurt businesses, including bars and restaurants.
