The Community Preventive Services Task Force recommends provider referral partner notification to increase HIV testing and identification of previously undiagnosed HIV-positive individuals. Partner counseling and referral services involve voluntary disclosure of sexual or needle-sharing partners by a patient diagnosed with HIV infection. Providers or other professionals then notify partners of HIV exposure. Ideally, partners are tested and receive prevention or risk reduction counseling — or enter into care if they test positive.
