The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommends out-of-school-time academic programs that don’t focus on a specific subject to improve reading and math skills in academically at-risk students. These programs are provided outside regular school hours to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The programs must include an academic component, like supervised time to finish homework, and may include sports, snacks, or counseling. CPSTF found that these out-of-school-time academic programs improve math and reading skills, though not as much as math-and reading-focused programs.
