The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommends comprehensive tobacco control programs to reduce people’s tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke. These programs are typically coordinated efforts at the population level to:

  • Reduce people’s interest in using tobacco
  • Increase tobacco use quit rates
  • Reduce secondhand smoke exposure
  • Prevent young people from starting to use tobacco

CPSTF found that evidence indicates that these programs reduce tobacco use in adults and young people, increase quit rates, and help reduce diseases and deaths related to tobacco.
