Reduce the proportion of adults with chronic kidney disease — CKD‑01 Data Methodology and Measurement

About the National Data

Data

Baseline: 12.7 percent of adults aged 18 years and over had chronic kidney disease in 2013-16

Target: 11.4 percent

Numerator
Number of adults aged 18 years and over with chronic kidney disease stages 1–4.
Denominator
Number of adults aged 18 years and over with measured urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) and information to compute estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
Target-setting method
Minimal statistical significance
Target-setting method details
Minimal statistical significance, assuming the same standard error for the target as for the baseline.
Target-setting method justification
Trend data were not available for this objective. The standard error was used to calculate a target based on minimal statistical significance, assuming the same standard error for the target as for the baseline. This method was used because a minimal statistically significant improvement is expected. This conservative target is realistic to achieve because the objective aims to reduce prevalence of a chronic condition in an aging U.S. population with a high burden of risk factors. National efforts such as Million Hearts Initiative and the National Diabetes Prevention Program make this target realistic to achieve.

Methodology

Methodology notes

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages 1–4 defined as urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) ≥ 30 mg/g (single measurement) or eGFR between 15 and 59 ml/min/1.73 m². The eGFR was computed using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation. Single ACR measurement was used (all measurements in mg/g). Numerator and denominator are based on NHANES Mobile Examination Center laboratory testing.

History

Comparable HP2020 objective
Modified, which includes core objectives that are continuing from Healthy People 2020 but underwent a change in measurement.
Changes between HP2020 and HP2030
In 2023, the objective has been modified due to changes to 2021 race free, serum creatine only CKD-EPI equation used to determine estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The target was adjusted using the original target-setting method.
Revision History
Revised.

In 2023, the original baseline was revised from 14.1 to 12.7 percent due to changes to 2021 race free, serum creatine only CKD-EPI equation used to determine estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The target was adjusted from 12.8 to 11.4 percent to reflect the revised baseline using the original target-setting method.
