Summary

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of long-term disability. Low-income populations, some racial/ethnic groups, and people who live in certain geographic regions are more likely to have a stroke and to die of a stroke. Interventions to lower people’s risk for stroke by improving blood pressure, diet, and physical activity are critical for reducing stroke deaths. Raising awareness of stroke signs and symptoms and improving stroke management can also help reduce death and disability related to stroke.
