The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommends increasing the unit price of alcohol by raising taxes to reduce heavy drinking and related harms. CPSTF found that these alcohol excise taxes reduce drunk driving, motor vehicle crashes, and deaths. Public health effects are expected to be proportional to the size of the tax increase.
