Summary
Methadone is a synthetic opioid used to address pain and treat people with opioid use disorder. Deaths involving methadone have decreased in recent years, but thousands of people still die from methadone overdoses each year. Interventions to change health care providers’ opioid prescribing behaviors can help reduce methadone-related deaths. Distributing naloxone to reverse overdoses and providing access to medications for opioid use disorder can also help reduce overdose deaths.
