Each month we feature select National Health Observances (NHOs) that support our mission to improve health across the nation. This month we are raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and brain health, sickle cell disease, and HIV testing.
To help you spread the word, we’ve pulled together some resources you can use to promote and advocate for better health in your community.
- Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month
Each June, Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month is recognized as a time to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Share these resources from the National Institute on Aging about caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Be sure to also view the Healthy People 2030 evidence-based resources related to dementias. Lastly, share our MyHealthfinder resource to help people stay healthy as they age.
- World Sickle Cell Day (6/19)
World Sickle Cell Day is observed each year on June 19 to increase the public’s knowledge about sickle cell disease. Help your community learn about sickle cell disease by sharing these facts sheets from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Don’t forget to share our MyHealthfinder resource to help parents learn about getting their newborn screened for sickle cell and other diseases. Finally, check out these Healthy People 2030 evidence-based resources related to blood disorders.
- National HIV Testing Day (6/27)
HIV.gov recognizes National HIV Testing Day on June 27 to highlight the importance of HIV testing. This year’s theme is Take the Test & Take the Next Step – a reminder for everyone to know their HIV status and take steps to stay healthy. Help promote this observance by sharing the CDC’s social media toolkit and resources from their Let’s Stop HIV Together campaign. MyHealthfinder also has information for consumers about getting tested for HIV and questions for the doctor about HIV testing. Finally, check out and share this Healthy People 2030 evidence-based resource on increasing HIV screening.
We hope you’ll join the conversation and promote these NHOs with your networks! Together, we can work towards a healthier nation.
