Public Comment Period to Open on Two Reports on Alcohol and Health

HHS and USDA will invite the public to provide input on two separate but complementary reports on the relationship between alcohol and health starting January 15. These reports and the public comments received will be considered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as the two departments collaborate to develop the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The comment period will close on February 14, 2025. Additional details on this public comment opportunity are available on DietaryGudelines.gov.

Today, the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD), an HHS committee, released the draft report of its study on alcohol intake and health. ICCPUD supported an independent scientific review panel that conducted data analyses and an evidence review on alcohol and health beginning in early 2022. The draft report summarizes the findings of its study; it does not include recommendations on alcohol consumption.

In late December, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) published a report containing the findings from a series of systematic reviews of the scientific evidence on alcohol consumption and health. The report, directed by Congress in the 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act, also does not include recommendations on alcohol consumption.
