ICYMI: 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Held Second Meeting

Rockville, Md. – ICYMI: Last week, on May 10, the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee convened in person for its second official meeting.

The Committee heard opening remarks from U.S. Public Health Service Rear Admiral (RDML) Paul Reed, Director of HHS’ Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, who thanked the Committee for their service and acknowledged how their work helps promote health, well-being, and resilience through nutrition. RDML Reed also applauded the Committee’s overarching focus on health equity, a point detailed by the Committee’s Health Equity Working Group chair, Dr. Sameera Talegawkar, PhD.

Co-chairs Sarah Booth, PhD and Angela Odoms-Young, PhD begin the meeting with an update of the Committee’s progress since its first official meeting in February. The remainder of the meeting consisted of presentations from members of each of four Subcommittees charged with addressing scientific questions on the following topics: dietary patterns and specific dietary components across life stages, diet in pregnancy and birth through adolescence, food pattern modeling and data analysis, and strategies for individuals and families related to diet quality and weight management. At the conclusion of each Subcommittee presentation, additional time was allowed for questions and broader Committee discussion.

Comprised of 20 nationally recognized science and nutrition experts, the Committee will provide independent, science-based advice and recommendations to be considered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the development of the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (Dietary Guidelines). Through the end of 2024, the Committee will rigorously review and evaluate all available scientific research and data using three approaches. Upon completion, they will submit their recommendations to HHS and USDA, which will inform the development of the tenth edition of the Dietary Guidelines.

The Committee’s next meeting is scheduled for September 13, 2023 and will include opportunities for the public to make oral comments. The Committee is accepting written public comments throughout the entirety of its work. More details will be made available on DietaryGuidelines.gov closer to the meeting date.
