New Article Details the Process Used to Develop the Dietary Guidelines for Americans

When it comes to healthy eating and nutrition, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (Dietary Guidelines) is one of the best tools we have to help individuals in the United States get and stay healthy. As the nation's leading source of science-based recommendations on dietary intake to meet nutrient needs, promote health, and prevent disease, the Dietary Guidelines gives the nation an actionable playbook to lead healthier lives.

If you've ever wanted to know more about the Dietary Guidelines, you're in luck. Addressing Misinformation about the Dietary Guidelines for Americans was recently published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Authored by staff from the U.S. Department of Health and Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this publication explains how the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is formed and vetted, how it considers the scientific evidence on nutrition and health, and what information is included in the scientific report that the Committee delivers to the federal government. The article also highlights the steps taken to ensure that the Dietary Guidelines reflects the diverse cultural foodways and nutrition needs that exist in the United States.
