Earlier this year, staff from ODPHP, along with other federal partners at CDC and NIH, organized a listening session to identify key research areas that may help inform the third edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines (Guidelines). While the next edition of the Guidelines is not expected to be released until 2028, discussions among the global health and physical activity communities about what to include are already well underway.
Key takeaways from the listening session were recently published in an article authored by ODPHP staff and other colleagues in the Translational Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.
The article also features a call to action with four primary ways that the scientific community can get involved in promoting the current edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and assisting in the development of the next edition:
- Contribute to the literature base that will inform the next edition of the Guidelines (works must be published by December 31, 2025 to be considered for inclusion in the systematic literature review).
- Submit nominations for members of the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee (coming in spring of 2025).
- Refer to the current Guidelines and promotional materials from Move Your Way® and the CDC’s Active People Healthy Nation℠ when encouraging physical activity.
- Join the ODPHP email list to stay informed about the Guidelines development process.
