HHS Launches the National Youth Sports Strategy

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced the launch of the National Youth Sports Strategy. The Strategy aims to unify U.S. youth sports culture around a shared vision: that one day all youth will have the opportunity, motivation, and access to play sports — regardless of their race, ethnicity, sex, ability, or ZIP code.

National Youth Sports Strategy

Developed in response to Presidential Executive Order 13824, the Strategy outlines actionable strategies to increase youth sports participation and awareness of its benefits, monitor and evaluate youth sports participation, and recruit and engage volunteers in youth sports programming.

Representatives from across HHS developed the Strategy using information from a public listening session, a literature review, an environmental scan, and public comments. It serves as a federal roadmap outlining opportunities for youth, adults, organizations, communities, and policymakers to improve the youth sports landscape in the United States.

The Strategy includes information about:

  • Federal government efforts in physical activity, nutrition, and youth sports
  • Youth sports participation and access
  • Youth sports around the world
  • Benefits and barriers to youth sports participation
  • Opportunities to increase youth sports participation
  • Next steps for HHS action on youth sports

It also includes 6 Bright Spot features that describe how successful youth sports programs have used effective strategies to increase participation.
