Technology tends to reflect the people who create it. For this reason, designers and developers of digital content are uniquely positioned to support projects and processes that take people’s unique information and access needs into account. Here are some goals to work toward:
- Strive for a digital design team that’s composed of people with a range of backgrounds, abilities, and experiences — and prioritize engaging users with a range of backgrounds, abilities, and experiences in the design process.
- Encourage your team to address the unique barriers people face, continually expanding access and participation — especially among groups that are underrepresented, like people with disabilities, people with low incomes, LGB people, older adults, people from racial and ethnic minority groups, and people who speak limited English.
- Make sure your team accounts for — and values — the unique needs and preferences of all user groups at each step of the design and development process.
