Section 7 Establish Content Governance

Now that you’ve invested in making your health website accessible and easy to use, it’s time to clearly document how key decisions about content are made, how changes are initiated and communicated, and how content is kept up to date. The processes and policies that impact your digital content are all part of content governance.

A content governance plan will provide clarity and transparency, promote consistency of content, maximize team efficiency, and help with quality control. It will also help ensure future content decisions promote digital health literacy and usability.

Content governance plans

A content governance plan, particularly one that includes quality guidelines, can also go a long way toward addressing misinformation online. For example, action steps to address misinformation may include:

  • Working to understand users’ information needs, concerns, and questions — and creating content to proactively address them
  • Citing credible sources and directing users to a broad range of trustworthy sites, including community organizations
  • Enlisting subject matter experts to serve as content reviewers
  • Ensuring health content is accurate, easily accessible, understandable, and up to date
