Web users want the option to start over or jump between pages.27 However, we know that users with limited literacy skills may not use breadcrumbs.54, 70
Breadcrumbs are navigation elements that can help users orient themselves within a website — as well as efficiently move between related pages. Usually, you’ll see breadcrumbs near the top of the page (generally below the browser’s address bar). For example, if users are reading about symptoms of diabetes, breadcrumbs might show: Home > Health Conditions > Diabetes > Symptoms.54
With this in mind, include large buttons that take users back to the homepage or the main menu pages on the site.54, 62, 70
Figure 6.5: This page on tumor markers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) features breadcrumbs, a clear left navigation menu, and a top menu bar to offer users different ways to navigate the site.

Use a menu button for mobile
Mobile devices have limited space. Instead of using a left-hand navigation menu on mobile, add a menu button that opens a custom, mobile-optimized menu. That way, users can expand the menu as needed.
Allow mobile users to go back to the homepage by including a home button or a home option in the menu. And avoid relying only on the “hamburger button” as a navigation cue — when possible, include the word “menu” alongside the icon.
